Ten years. Millions of people. One symbol.

To most people, a semicolon is just punctuation. To us, it's a declaration — that your story is not finished, and that you don't have to face the next chapter alone.

This is happening right now — every single day in the U.S.

Get a clearer picture of what’s weighing on you

Most people do not show up with perfect words for what they are feeling. They just know something feels wrong. The Semicolon Journey helps you make sense of what may be weighing on you, then guides you toward the areas that deserve a closer look. It’s not a diagnosis. It’s a starting point, and it takes less than ten minutes.

What Is the Semicolon Score?

The Semicolon Score is a starting point, not a verdict.

Mental health is not one thing. It’s a constellation of experiences — how you sleep, how you cope, what you’ve been through, what you’re carrying right now. The Semicolon Score is our way of listening to that whole picture at once.

When you complete the initial Project Semicolon assessment, your answers across multiple validated screening domains are translated into a single personal index. That number — your Semicolon Score — reflects patterns across the areas you reported on. It isn’t a diagnosis. It isn’t a ranking. It doesn’t tell you how serious your struggles are or how far you have to go.

What it does do is help us meet you where you are.

Using your score, we curate the assessments, resources, and support most relevant to your specific experience. If your responses indicate elevated anxiety but minimal sleep disruption, your journey looks different than someone whose primary challenges lie elsewhere — and it should.

Your Semicolon Score lives on your personal dashboard and updates as you move through your journey. It is private, it is yours, and it exists for one reason only: to make sure the help you receive is as specific to you as possible.

The semicolon was chosen as a symbol because the sentence didn’t end. Neither does your score — it’s a living reflection of a story still being written.

Project Semicolon is for anyone navigating life’s most difficult chapters. While we’re known for our work in mental health and suicide prevention, our mission extends far deeper—we exist for the struggles that often precede crisis moments. Absolutely not. The semicolon tattoo was never meant to be exclusive—it belongs to anyone who finds meaning in its message. Whether you’ve participated in Project Semicolon or simply resonate with what the semicolon represents, you have every right to wear it. The symbol is an open invitation to anyone facing a moment where they questioned continuing. It’s a declaration that your story isn’t over, and a quiet reminder to yourself and others that hope persists, even in darkness.

No. While mental health is at the heart of the semicolon movement, the symbol has evolved to represent all forms of struggle and resilience. Pink semicolons honor those battling cancer. Rainbow semicolons celebrate LGBTQ+ communities finding their voice and their place. The semicolon has become a universal mark of perseverance—a way to say “I’m still here” regardless of the battle. Whatever your story, there’s a semicolon that speaks to your journey.

No. There’s no “official” placement for the semicolon tattoo. Some choose visible placements as daily reminders or conversation starters. Others prefer more private locations as personal affirmations. The placement is entirely yours—wear your semicolon wherever feels most meaningful to you. What matters isn’t where the semicolon sits on your body, but what it represents in your heart.
