At some point — probably around 8th grade, and then again harder in high school — people start asking what you want to do with your life. Career day. College counselors. Relatives at Thanksgiving. Application essays that want you to articulate, with certainty and conviction, who you plan to become. The question arrives everywhere, and the implication is clear: you should know.

But here’s the actual research on this: most adults report that their career path changed significantly from what they expected at 18. Many people don’t find meaningful work until their thirties or later, after several iterations of trying things and discovering more about themselves. The expectation that a 16-year-old should have a firm direction is not supported by how human development actually works. Adolescence is specifically the period of exploration and identity formation — not arrival.

That gap between expectation and reality is where a lot of anxiety lives. You’re being asked to make a decision that requires information you don’t have yet — about who you are, what you value, what you’re good at, what you’d actually be able to do every day without losing your mind. Pretending to have certainty you don’t have is one response. Spiraling with anxiety because you don’t is another. Neither is particularly useful.

What’s worth doing instead: collecting small data points about yourself. What activities absorb your attention? What problems do you find interesting? What kind of work environment makes you feel alive? What do you keep coming back to even when no one is telling you to? These are not definitive answers — they’re clues. Identity and direction get clearer through doing and noticing, not through thinking your way to a conclusion in the abstract.

The goal at your age is not to have it figured out. The goal is to be curious and honest enough to notice what you’re actually drawn to, and brave enough to try things before you’re certain. Certainty is usually a lie anyway. Most people who say they always knew what they wanted to do are simplifying a messier truth in retrospect.

You are allowed to not know. You are allowed to be in-progress. That is not a deficiency. It is an accurate and appropriate relationship to a question that genuinely requires more time.
